The author of the Ellie Foreman series (A Shot to Die For, etc.) launches the underwhelming first of a new series featuring another Chicago sleuth, former cop-turned-PI Georgia Davis, who shares a past with Foreman. Cam Jordan, a mentally deficient sex offender, stands accused of murdering 17-year-old Sara Long in a forest preserve. Since the victim's friends saw Cam standing over Sara's body clutching a bloody baseball bat, it appears to be an open-and-shut case. Hired by Cam's sister to investigate, Davis learns that Sara may have been in the forest as part of a hazing ritual conducted by a clique of her posh high school classmates, one of whom is an ambitious local prosecutor's daughter. Davis at one point makes the poor choice of pretending to be a social worker from the dead girl's school, an easily exposed lie that sets back her probe. Hellmann also depicts the criminal justice system with less sophistication than readers might expect. The result is a predictable mystery with little suspense. (Apr.)

Woody Allen's raunchier films, conferences over cannabis, psychiatric analysis in Amsterdam's Red Light District, ancient Indian philosophy, Tai Chi Chuan - do these seem enough to combat the financial downturn?
Sandeep, struggling novelist, takes on the roles of clandestine cameraman, ghost blogger and tai chi teacher as he awaits his big break. A convoluted twist of fate lands him in Amsterdam, propelling him through hilarious adventures in the toppling world of economic crisis, the murky domain of publishing, the crazy corporate circus and modern day relationships across mind, body and modem.
During months of fruitless preparation of query letters, synopses and self addressed stamped envelopes, he comes across a consultant in love, an e-minded psychiatrist, a Dutch-American financial theorist, an octogenarian scholar, an attractive political science researcher, a visionary entrepreneur and a horde of colourful characters scurrying along in the corporate rat race. The journey towards grand truth and illusion - and the great fuzzy area in between - encompasses credit crisis conferences, hemp adorned coffee shops, personality disorders, packaged philosophy, identity swaps, branding phenomena, the deepest wisdom of the Gita, author evenings, Collateralised Debt Obligations and all conquering love.
The novel combines unrestrained insights into the human mind and its networked playfield, doing so with more than a touch of humour.

2009 Christy Award winner!
In the small town of Dogwood, West Virginia, Karin has buried her shattered dreams by settling for a faithful husband whose emotional distance from her deep passions and conflicts leaves her isolated. Loaded with guilt, she tries to raise three small children and “do life” the best she can. Will returns to Dogwood intent on pursuing the only woman he has ever loved—only to find there is far more standing in his way than lost years in prison. The secrets of Will and Karin's past begin to emerge through Danny Boyd, a young boy who wishes he hadn't survived the tragedy that knit those two together as well as tore them apart. The trigger that will lay their pain bare and force them to face it rather than flee is the unlikely figure of Ruthie Bowles, a withered, wiry old woman who leads Karin so deep into her anger against God that it forces unexpected consequences.
